Jess Jess Good Candy Still Undefeated After 2016 Debut at Remington Park

OKLAHOMA CITY, April 26, 2016 – Extreme Racing for Charity was the promotional feature at Remington Park on Sunday as a series of exotic animal races helped raise money for many charitable organizations. The large crowd of nearly 20,000 was also treated to superstar American Quarter Horse action with Jess Good Candy making his first start of the year.

The 2015 American Quarter Horse Association Champion 2-year-old and All American Futurity winner returned to his home track for his first start at age 3. The $70,000 Mr Master Bug Stakes for Oklahoma-breds gave him the stage for his first race since winning the $3 million All American at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico last September.

Jess Good Candy showed he is set to be a force on the 3-year-old derby scene later in the year. The bright sorrel colt rallied to win the Mr Master Bug by three-quarters of a length, handling the 350 yards in :17.672 seconds over a fast track. Jess Good Candy ran down the early leader A Bee C and overcame some slight contact with BV Midnight Express at the start to prevail under Ivan Carnero.

He kind of got a little rowdy in (the starting gate) right before they kicked them,” Carnero said. “He’s a 440 (yard) horse and he doesn’t break really sharp. They out-broke him by a couple lengths. About halfway he was starting to run. I thought 350 (yards) was going to be a little short for him but he took that pretty well.

Owned by PV Quarter Horse Farms of Ratliff City, Okla. and trained by Clint Crawford, Jess Good Candy succeeded with the first step of his trainer’s plan for the year but not before causing some nervousness.

I felt like there was more pressure on this race than when he won the All American,” Crawford noted. “We’ll take him on to the Ruidoso Derby, we’ll probably skip the Rainbow Derby and then on to the All American Derby.

The heavy wagering favorite at 1-2 odds, Jess Good Candy paid $3 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.10 to show. A Bee C held second and returned $8 to place and $3.40 to show. BV Midnight Express, the 2015 winner of the $1,170,000 Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park, was third and paid $2.40 to show.

The victory for Jess Good Candy was worth $41,838 to him, running his career earnings to $1,561,078. Now a perfect five wins from as many attempts, Jess Good Candy is a colt by Good Reason SA from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Send Candy and was bred in Oklahoma by the late Carl Pevehouse.

The Mr Master Bug is named after the 1982 All American Futurity winner who was bred and owned by Marvin and Lela Barnes of Ada, Okla. Mr Master Bug earned American Quarter Horse Champion honors in three consecutive years from 1982-1984.
