The National Cowboy is the longest test of the Remington Park season for Paints and Appaloosas at 440 yards. Painted Turnpike was a clear leader at the halfway point but many of his six rivals began to cut into his lead as the field raced towards the finish. Dashin JJ gained with every stride as he tried to defeat the first Speedhorse Triple Crown winner for a second consecutive race. Dashin JJ had pulled the upset over Painted Turnpike in the Grade 1, Mister Lewie Memorial on May 20.

Under Cody Smith, Painted Turnpike held off Dashin JJ, and the rest, to win by a neck in :21.52 seconds over a fast track. Dashin JJ finished a nose ahead of third-place Major Mac who was also closing in on the winner.

Owned and bred by Nolan Pevehouse of Webbers Falls, Okla. and trained by Matt Whitekiller, Painted Turnpike was the heavy wagering favorite at 1-2 odds, paying $3 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Dashin JJ paid $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Major Mac returned $3.60 to show.
