DTL SAMUREYE WAS HIS MONSTER SELF, WINNING GRADE 1 NATIONAL COWBOY AND WESTERN HERITAGE MUSEUM STAKES

OKLAHOMA CITY - June 1, 2019 – It seems the passing of the baton from World Champion Paint, Painted Turnpike, has occurred this season to another Paint who is making a case for that World Champion title – DTL Samureye

This 4-year-old gelding took a step toward that goal on Saturday at Remington Park, winning the Grade 1 $34,450 National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Stakes for his seventh win in a row, including six stakes or derbies. DTL Samureye began the meet with one of the biggest upsets in Remington Park history, beating that multiple World Champion horse Painted Turnpike in the $20,000 Paul Harber Memorial Stakes on April 12 when Painted Turnpike could manage only a fourth place finish.

Then on May 17, DTL Samureye stamped his trademark monstrous break from the gate and left everyone in the dust during the Grade 1 $30,000 Mister Lewie Memorial Stakes, beating the track record holder at the distance in that race, Ima Real Livewire.  Ima Real Livewire had set the record in the Grade 1 $48,200 PSBA American Paint Derby, running 400 yards in 19.32 seconds. He finished a distant third to DTL Samureye in the subsequent race. That’s when it was evident that DTL Samureye was something special.

He once again proved it Saturday night, breaking on top like a rocket into space and drew off to win by a full length against an excellent field of older Paints and Appaloosas. It was no surprise to the public as this gelded son of Royal Quick Flash, out of the Mr Eye Opener (QH) mare Eysa Savvy Queen, was sent off as the heavy betting choice at 3-5 odds. He paid $3.40 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show.

DTL Samureye earned $20,622 for the win and improved to 15 starts, 10 wins, three seconds and a wallet that just keeps growing, with lifetime earnings of $133,199. His owner is Almada Racing of San Antonio, Texas, is trained by Josue Ponceand ridden by Jesse Levario. He was bred in Oklahoma by Dean and Tonya Lester.
